From the Cradle to the Forest: Swings, Celebration, and Krishna
Swings have traditionally been associated with childhood and play; and they also evoke notions of abandon, flirtation, and freedom. The focus of this colorfully illustrated presentation will be on the symbolism of swings and their connection to the god Krishna. Examples will be drawn from poetry, miniature paintings, Krishna-lila theater performances and temple presentations. Images from popular culture and contemporary material culture will also be considered.
