Craft in India: From Tradition to the Contemporary

Meeta Sandeep will discuss craft in India with an emphasis on hand printing. She will discuss her work with the Bindass Collective, an organization that has worked with traditional block printers who use natural dyeing techniques and developed new techniques and colors with rural artisans. They work with weaving, leather, handmade paper, embroidery and many other arts. They contemporize traditional skills/designs and link them to the market, directly and through their organization. Additionally, they work in a socially and environmentally sustainable way, keeping in mind women’s empowerment, rural-urban exchanges and fair trade.

Meeta Sandeep is the co-founder of the Bindass Collective. Shehas worked at the intersection of art, craft techniques, design and social development for over 20 years.
