Collection Highlights: A Sampling of South Asian Textile Traditions in the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection

Global in scope and ranging in date from the fifth century Coptic textiles to contemporary fiber art, the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection is home to 13,000 textiles total and 680 from South Asia.  Sherry invites colleagues and students in the South Asian Studies community to join her in the Berge Classroom in Nancy Nicholas Hall (1235B) for an in-person viewing of some of the South Asian textiles in the collection and a conversation about how object-based learning can support research, teaching, and learning in South Asia studies.  Sorry, no food or drink allowed at this program.

Dr. Sherry Harlacher is Pleasant Rowland Endowed Director of Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection and Director, Center for Textiles and Design in the School of Human Ecology, UW-Madison.  Her research specialty is Buddhist material culture and its role in nationalist discourses in South and Southeast Asia.
