Presentation Description
This presentation by Ms. Gul Kalash, the only woman from the Kalash community who has pursued archaeology and anthropology, will explore the challenges the Kalash face as their community encounters globalization and modern influences. The Kalash people, residing in the remote valleys of northern Pakistan, have long been recognized for their unique cultural heritage and traditional practices, which encompass distinct religious beliefs, festivals, and social structures. However, the forces of globalization and modernization are increasingly encroaching upon their way of life, presenting a complex array of challenges and opportunities. Ms. Gul Kalash explores the impact of modernization on Kalash traditions, focusing on how external influences such as tourism, media, and economic development threaten to erode their cultural identity and practices. Through ethnographic research and interviews with community members, she identifies key areas where traditional customs are being transformed or discarded, including ritual practices, language, and social norms. Furthermore, she examines the responses of the Kalash to these changes, highlighting resilience and adaptability as they navigate between preserving their heritage and embracing modernization. The findings underscore the necessity of striking a balance between cultural preservation and the realities of global integration, advocating for a model of sustainable development that respects and reflects the Kalash’s cultural uniqueness. This research contributes to broader conversations on cultural preservation in the face of globalization, emphasizing the importance of community agency and participatory approaches in addressing the challenges posed by modern influences.
