Virendra Singh (October, 1949 – June, 2024), or better known as Virendra Ji was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan and spent most of his adult life in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where he taught Hindi with the University of Wisconsin, College Year in India Program. He is without doubt one of the most influential teachers of Hindi as a second language in the past 50 years. After teaching Hindi for the US Peace Corps from 1969-71, he began his long affiliation with the University of Wisconsin, College Year in India Program. He continued in this position from 1972 until he retired in 2013. He also was the instructor for Elementary Hindi in the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) hosted by the University of Wisconsin Madison beginning from its first year (2003) and during various other years until his retirement in 2013. He was a gentle but firm teacher and helped hundreds of students and faculty learn how to immerse themselves into the Hindi language in a way that was both memorable and beneficial to their long-term association with India and South Asian culture in general. His smile and humor made being around him an experience that was unforgettable. J. Mark Kenoyer, July 28, 2024.
